When sewing pockets, I like to make a template with the seam allowances removed. This helps to keep the edges smooth and even.
To begin:
Mark the seam allowance at the top of the pocket and split the allowance into two. Fold the raw edge down, encase it with the second fold, and press to hold.
Press the seam allowances, and then pin the top seam.
Top Stitch with two rows at the top and bottom of the pocket.
Put these to one side while we make the flaps.
